The How & Why of Dry Brushing
D R Y B R U S H I N G …..
Probably the strangest concept to those who are unfamiliar but let’s be honest even if you are familiar with this wonderful little habit it’s a little strange. Strange but oh so wonderful. Not only does it feel invigorating for your skin, but it supports a healthy lymph system as well! It’s basically exactly what it sounds like: taking a hand-held brush with soft bristles and brushing your skin with it.
Here’s how it works:
Taking the brush, usually before showering, you’ll start with your toes and work your way up your body with short, smooth strokes. You’ll want to aim your strokes towards your heart. The idea is that you’re stimulating your lymph system, which is a part of the immune system that helps rid the body of unwanted bacteria and toxins. Stimulating the lymph system aids in detoxing the body and supporting the immune system, which could mean less time spent being sick and just an overall healthier body! Our lymph system is passive, meaning that the flow of lymph through our body is stimulated by movement. This is one of the many benefits of exercise! Putting this to practice before showering is a bonus because you’re skin will be more exfoliated with open pores.
Why you should do it:
Apart from supporting the lymph system, dry brushing has lots of other benefits, including:
Providing a natural energy boost. The feel of your skin afterwards is so invigorating!
Exfoliates the skin by brushing away dead skin cells
Reducing cellulite
Cleaning pores
Basically, dry brushing is an affordable, simple habit that could be really beneficial for your immune system and your skin. I found my brush on Amazon for under $15. I specifically chose one that was wooden and not plastic since I try to limit the amount of plastic in our home as much as possible. I’ll admit I’m still trying really hard to not forget to do this everyday, but on the days I do I feel like I’m starting my day off so right. I’d love to hear what you think about this weird yet awesome routine! Have you tried it? Any tips on not forgetting to do it everyday? Tell me!
